Watersports Palace “Luzhniki”

The project was selected as the winner of the competition for the concept of the Luzhniki swimming pool reconstruction. Totally, 43 applications both from the Russian architectural offices and international consortiums were submitted.
Renovation project for Luzhniki swimming center proposed by UNK project bureau includes both measures for partial recreation of its historical outlook, and a concept of future interior solutions, with inclusion of authentic exterior elements. Luzhniki swimming center is an extremely complex engineering facility: its different levels house a SPA-complex, a fitness center, and water play attractions.

Quite a few terraces and recreation zones are planned around the swimming pools, all water surfaces are inscribed into circles that emphasize the facades’ theme; the same pattern is repeated in the shopping gallery decoration. Within the overall light scale, main focus is placed onto water rides designed in vivid brand colors of the complex. Yet another particularity of the swimming center is its retractable roof, which allows to transform the center into an open-air beach. A glazed atrium of the main entry provides the visitors with a view over the whole interior space of the complex. The swimming center «bursts» through the atrium with a transparent water ride that attracts the attention of passers-by and invites them to get inside. The atrium space itself is organized around an installation inspired by decorative elements of the complex brand.
